Choosing a first instrument with your child
A calm, practical way to consider interest, fit and readiness before lessons begin.
Start with curiosity
Notice which sounds, instruments and kinds of music hold your child’s attention. A useful first choice does not have to be a permanent choice.
Keep the first goal small
Early progress is easier to recognise when the goal is specific: a comfortable posture, a steady pulse, a short phrase or a simple piece.
Make room for conversation
Ask what felt enjoyable, difficult or surprising. This helps a teacher understand motivation without turning practice into a test.
Talk to the school
Share interests, previous experience and practical availability. A parent-led enquiry can help identify an appropriate next step.
